You Don’t Find Peace. You Become Peace.

Many of us cannot be here because we look at the entire staircase instead of focusing on one step.

What comes to mind when you hear or see the words “Peace” and “Surrender”? Most of us think of “inaction” or “stillness.” Sometimes those things are needed, but one does not simply achieve peace, being here now, and happiness by being inactive. Being here now, being peaceful, and surrendering are a few of the most active things you can do in your life.

The definition of Peace is freedom from disturbance; tranquility. A state or period in which there is no war or a war has ended. A more spiritual description of Peace is an inner state of well-being and calm.

Most of us know that peace is not easy to come by, not without doing some work. Our work tends to be done outside of ourselves, which is excellent, but we continue to see that true peace is still not here. It may be tough for many of us to find because Peace is not something you can find but something you have to Be. Confusion arises about “Just Being here” or “Peace.” We think we have to be calmer, meditate more, and not let our environment trigger us, but how can we do these things if we are not at peace ourselves?

The things we wish to see in the world come from within us. Being peace means doing who you are, being who you are, and trusting that you are in the safety net of spirit and yourself. Being here means being yourself and letting things fall where they may because you know things will be the way they should, with or without your “control.”

Try this exercise:

  • Collect your pen and your journal or notebook.
  • Find a quiet space to sit and breathe.
  • Close your eyes and ask yourself these questions.
  • Ask yourself, if the fear, pressure, and stress of society did not exist, who would I be?
  • If the anxiety, pressure, and stress of my family did not exist, who would I be?
  • If the pressure from myself did not exist, who would I be?
  • If my fears were understood and worked on, who would I be?
  • Write down who you would be, or essentially, who you are, but it is being stored away.
  • How can you start becoming that person? One step at a time.

Being the peace we want is being the person we wrote down in our journal. Many of us cannot be here because we look at the entire staircase instead of focusing on one step. Focus on the step you’re taking and as you take it, trust that things are coming together as they should.

Remember the calmer energy you were working at? You’ll find that the energy comes naturally because the peace you are becoming is now bleeding into your outer world. Why does being peace or being here terrify us so much? It means surrendering, letting go, focusing on YOUR step, and understanding the control you thought you had was just a fantasy.

When you can sit and permit yourself to be peaceful, happy, and to be here, you may experience what I felt – relief. Whenever I remind myself I do not have to control everything, I breathe more easily. I live happier.
